About
The story of Sullivan Communications began in May 1993, within the walls of a modest two-bedroom apartment just east of Memphis, Tennessee. What started as a hobby for owner Ty Sullivan—collecting audio gear and lighting for house parties—soon caught the eye of his inner circle. After one particularly successful event, a friend remarked, “You should be doing this for a living. You have the gear, the music, and you know exactly what people want to hear.”
That night, a seed was planted. While the business wouldn’t be officially christened just yet, the vision of “what could be” began to take root.
From Adversity to Action
In November 1993, a downturn in the pharmaceutical industry transformed that vision into reality. As federal healthcare reform loomed, Ty’s employer initiated a massive 40% workforce reduction. Facing unemployment for the first time, Ty found clarity during a ski trip in Colorado. Encouraged by family and friends, he officially launched Sullivan Communications.
The mission was simple: To provide premier communication services for individuals and small businesses. Drawing on Ty’s background in graphic arts and radio, the company initially specialized in:
Professional DJ and lighting services
Voice talent for weddings and private events
By 1994, cost-conscious photography and videography
Navigating Change
As the mid-90s brought a surge in portable tech and 8mm video, the market shifted. While others chased corporate profits, Sullivan Communications doubled down on the personal touch, focusing on weddings and milestone celebrations.
In 1995, the company relocated to South Louisiana to embrace the region’s vibrant event culture. However, as the personal computer revolution gained momentum, Ty noticed a shift in demand. The business began pivoting toward IT—finding that computer repair and hardware upgrades were not only more profitable but allowed for a more sustainable pace than the grueling setup of event production.
Growth and Rebranding
1996 marked a pivotal move to Birmingham, Alabama, to focus on Public Relations and Graphic Arts. Upon arrival, Ty discovered a namesake already operating in the region. To forge a unique identity, the company rebranded as SULLIVANCOM. During this era, the firm reached two significant milestones:
Serving as the Director of Media Services for the Jefferson County March of Dimes.
Sponsoring a contestant in the Miss Illinois USA pageant, where Ty met Miss America 1998, Kate Shindle.
A New Era in Mississippi
In 1998, the company moved to its current home outside of Jackson, Mississippi. Following the “Y2K non-event,” SULLIVANCOM leaned heavily into IT infrastructure, specializing in computer repair and low-voltage cabling. By 2003, the firm was serving a massive footprint across Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana, and Tennessee.
“There wasn’t much downtime,” Ty recalls. “If I was awake, I was working to fix something for someone.”
This work ethic paid off. During the 2008 recession, while others faltered, SULLIVANCOM grew by absorbing the needs of the market. By 2010, the company boasted a roster of over 150 clients across the Southeast.
Returning to Our Roots
In 2014, a trip to California reignited Ty’s original passion. He integrated his “first loves”—voice talent, lighting, and DJ services—back into the company’s core offerings, creating a unique hybrid of IT expertise and high-end event production. By 2016, this expanded further into the Family Entertainment Center (FEC) industry, repairing complex arcade and laser tag systems throughout the region.
Resilience Through the Pandemic
The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented challenges, forcing a three-month shuttering of local operations. However, SULLIVANCOM stayed active behind the scenes, helping clients transition to remote work environments and video-conferencing solutions. By July, the company returned to on-site operations, leaner and more focused than ever.
Today, Sullivan Communications stands as a testament to resilience. No matter how the technological or economic landscape shifts, we remain committed to providing the quality, responsiveness, and personal touch our clients have relied on for over three decades.
Founder: Ty Sullivan
The foundation of Sullivan Communications, LLC is built upon the professional pedigree of its owner, Ty Sullivan. Having sharpened his skills within several Fortune 500 giants—including The Walt Disney Company, Xerox, AT&T, and Sprint—Ty has woven a culture of corporate-grade professionalism and excellence into the very fabric of the company.
A Lifelong Passion for Production
Long before his corporate career, Ty’s journey began in the booth. At just 13 years old, he was already managing soundboards and lighting for his church. This early exposure, followed by a collegiate career in radio, fueled a lifelong fascination with the technical artistry of sound and light.
These aren’t just “ingredients” to Ty; they are the toolkit of an expert event manager who understands the mechanics of a great atmosphere. He doesn’t just know how to host a party—he knows how to engineer an experience that your guests will talk about for years.
The Bridge to Technology
Following college, Ty applied his Communications degree across the fields of retail, pharmaceutical sales, and advertising. As the Information Technology revolution began to take hold, his natural curiosity led him to invest in his own servers and networking gear.
What started as personal exploration quickly turned into a professional calling. As colleagues and managers began seeking his technical expertise, Ty’s career shifted permanently into IT, culminating in a pivotal leadership role with AT&T by late 1997.
Award-Winning Expertise & A Personal Touch
For over a decade, Ty managed IT helpdesks for major regional companies, delivering award-winning service and creative solutions to complex technical challenges. This dual expertise in high-end event production and enterprise-level IT allows Sullivan Communications to offer a unique perspective that few others can match.
At Sullivan Communications, we balance that large-scale experience with a small-firm heart. Whether we are managing a complex technical infrastructure or producing a milestone event, our goal is to treat every client like family.
“No issue is too big, and no detail is too small.”
